FLEA CONTROL
FELINE INAPPROPRIATE ELIMINATIONThe most common behavior problem for which cats are taken to the veterinarian is urination outside the litter pan. This has come to be known as F.I.E. or feline inappropriate elimination. It is important to understand that this is NOT a diagnosis. It is a name we apply to a huge group of different physical diseases, cat to cat interactions, cat to human interactions, home management issues and behavior disorders. When you consult a veterinarian about issues of this nature, don’t expect a quick answer or an easy solution. You can anticipate a consultation that will include a lengthy discussion of your cat’s behavior and home environment, a complete physical examination and tests that include at least a urinalysis and possibly blood tests, stool tests and radiographs. Only at the conclusion of that process can a diagnosis can be made. Then recommendations are made with respect to medication, diet and environmental management |
Cat Clinic
Several years ago the development of once a month, dab-on products revolutionized flea control in cats. Gone are the days of sprays, powders, dips and in home extermination. There are now several types of very effective, easy to use products that control fleas well. Some of these products may also eliminate ear mites, ticks, and intestinal worms and prevent heartworms. As with all good products, there will be knock-off products. Some of the over-the-counter monthly flea products for cats have proven to be not only ineffective but in some cases deadly. It is important to know that the best products are prescription items and should be obtained from your veterinarian. We have several products at the Cat Clinic and the choice of which to use depends on your cat’s age, size and lifestyle and the number and type of other pets in the home.
